Introduction
According to the
ancient Vedic
philosophy, those who succeed in the realization of totality and
completeness
of their nature may reveal dimensions of life, which do not perish with
the
disintegration of the physical body. The explanation provided is
simple: human
nature is a product of the same dynamics - forces, energies, substances
and
forms, which sustain the wholeness of existence, and therefore the
realization
of totality and completeness of human nature means realization of
totality and
completeness of these dynamics. As far as the existential dynamics are
timeless
and ubiquitous, they can endow the life of an individual with a
timeless
dimension, if this individual succeeds to fully experience, understand
and know
them.
The above insight
from the Vedic wisdom
(Knapp, 1999) can be interpreted in the context of Wolfram's New Kind
of
Science (NKS) in the following way: what goes inside the individual who
earnestly and persistently apply physical, mental and spiritual efforts
to
grasp, comprehend and realize totality and completeness of the
existential
dynamics can ultimately achieve the level of complexity (totality,
completeness) of the whole universe or, using Wolfram's expression: the
level
of its computational sophistication (Wolfram, 2002). This is
exactly what
Wolfram's Principle
of Computational Equivalence asserts while applied to
human
self-organization: The
Individual
is capable to realize totality and completeness of The
Universal. Our
research
into the self-organizing nature of human dynamics explores the
conditions
facilitating this realization (Dimitrov, 2003).
Individual
dynamics relate to a specific
scale of the all-embracing existential manifold - the micro scale where
one's feelings, emotions, thoughts, ideas, aspirations and spiritual
beliefs
emerge, interact and transform. Universal dynamics manifest at the
macro scale
of the
existential manifold - the scale where a multitude of universal
'agents' - planetary,
galactic or cosmic - exhibit their timeless interplay. Both the
universal and
individual dynamics are connected with and sustained by a common centre
(source, focalizer) - a centre that keeps the
integrity of the
existential manifold and enables its phenomena and processes to
self-organize -
emerge, evolve and transform, while reflecting its never-ceasing
rhythm.
Simple rules of interaction
of individual dynamics are able to produce sophisticated patterns of
individual
and social behaviours, computational complexity of which is compatible
with the
computational sophistication of the universe. What are these simple
rules?
Rules
of
Interactions
There are three
rules of interaction at
the level of individual dynamics. They are applicable only to
authentic, that
is, genuinely experienced dynamics.
The first rule is
centring
(imploding):
one
needs to keep consciously connected with the centre of the existential
manifold
as projected on the micro scale of the individual
dynamics. Through this centre
one feels connected with the timeless dimension of the existential
dynamics,
while aware of their inexhaustible power. Without centring, human life
appears
meaningless: it makes no sense for the individuals to exert lifelong
efforts
for development and realization of their potentials, for learning and
growing
in intelligence, for exploring and experiencing the fathomless depths
of their
inner nature, if the death puts an end to all their endeavours,
aspirations and
achievements. The timeless centre of the existential dynamics is a
source of
creative inspiration and lifelong empowerment.
The practical
realization of the first
rule is through the technique of meditation. At the level of
human body, the projection of the centre of the existential manifold
can be
seen in one's heart, as its beats convey the existential rhythm to
every single
cell, organ and system of the living organism. When meditating on the
heart's
pulsations, we become aware of our connection with the rhythm of the
existential dynamics and their timeless centre.
The second rule
is growing
(exploding):
one
needs to nourish the growth of one's own dynamics both 'in depth'
(through
studying one's inner nature - the world inside) and 'in breadth'
(through
studying one's outer nature - the world outside). According to the
ancients,
the human mind needs to be nourished with knowledge, good will and
contemplation, the human heart - with love, compassion and caring for
others,
and the human soul - with truth, wisdom and
inspiration.
The practical
realization of the second
rule is through the technique of concentration. High level of
concentration of mental, emotional and psychological efforts is needed
in order
to explore and understand the enigmas and secrets of our inner and
outer worlds
and thus advance on the way to wisdom.
The third rule is
balancing
(harmonizing):
one needs to balance the growth 'in breadth' with a growth in 'depth'.
If the
harmony between the outward and inward spread of one's dynamics is
destroyed,
the individual energy either dissipates in all kinds of outward actions
with
little effect on the inner growth of the individual or is used for
personal
growth in isolation from society - the only locus where one's
achievements can
be directly tested and verified.
The practical
realization of the third
rule is through the technique of relaxation. In the process
of relaxation, we let nature speak and act through our bodies, minds
and souls.
Nature knows how to bring harmony in the dynamics of everything she
creates in
the best possible way. She can balance the growth of our dynamics
keeping high
the level of their creative energy.
The described
three rules are
simple in
the sense
that our capacity to realize them is inherent in our nature; what one
needs is
to be fully aware when involved in their realization.
The wisdom of the
ancients teach us that
there are seven grades of human awareness (Chevalier and Gheerbrant,
1991):
awareness of one's physical body, of one's feelings, of one's thoughts,
of
one's intuition, of one's inspiration, of one's will, and of one's life
as it
unfolds. The use of the rules of centring, growing and
balancing
through the
techniques of mediation, concentration and relaxation helps us
heighten the level of our awareness, expand our consciousness and thus
grasp
more of totality and completeness of
existence.
Irreducibility
and Fuzziness
The phenomenon of
computational
irreducibility
in NKS reflects the fundamental boundaries to science and knowing to
explain every single phenomenon and process of the existential manifold
in
which our lives unfold. As shown in our research on social
fuzziology
- the study of
fuzziness of human knowing, - fuzziness can never be fully eliminated
from our
understanding and experiencing of reality. It
moves from one level to another, and the levels of
fuzziness correspond to the levels of our awareness (Dimitrov, 2000;
Dimitrov
and Hodge, 2002; Dimitrov, 2003a).
To say that
fuzziness has moved to
another level means that the process of one's understanding has moved
to
another level also, and what was fuzzy and incomprehensible for the
mind at the
level, from where the fuzziness has pulled itself, has become clear and
comprehensible. Of course, this does not mean that there is no more
fuzziness
in one's understanding, that one has won the battle with the fuzziness
and has
succeeded to extinguish it once and for all. Fuzziness is still 'alive'
on each
new level and can become denser or expand wider. One can call the new
level
'higher' or 'deeper', it does not matter; what matters is that one's
understanding has become deeper, that one's consciousness has been
expanded,
that the limitations which fuzziness used to impose on the growth of
one's
awareness have been transcended. The inquiring consciousness will soon
encounter limitations that fuzziness brings with to the new level of
its
evolving dynamics; these limitations challenge us to explore it further
and
make it move again.
This is only a
general description of the
way towards realization of totality and completeness of the
existential dynamics;
the way towards wisdom for each individual differs in its actual
manifestation
and achievements. As Wolfram pointed out in NKS, something irreducible
has been
achieved in the process of evolution of the human species: a
fundamental
uniqueness of expression of The Universal through The
Individual -
uniqueness
that is sine qua non for the success of the human
pursuit of truth, wisdom
and immortality.
