The North Sydney Lymphedema Clinic provides post operative care:
1). Lymphatic drainage massage, compression bandaging and compression garments.
Lymphatic drainage massage is very effective as a post operative treatment to assist the lymphatic fluid into alternative pathways, after a mastectomy and / or removal of the majority of the axilla (armpit) lymphatic nodes. Another requirement is the prescribed fitting of a compression garment on the arm and an exercise program devised by the therapist.
2). A personal management program for a limb at risk of lymphoedema.
The best results are achieved by a daily routine of 15 minutes of gentle exercises, maintenance of skin hygiene, wearing of a compression garment, a sensible diet and regular lymphatic drainage massage.
3). Complex Physical Therapy.
The most effective treatment to remove oedema, improve lymphatic drainage and increase mobility.
There are four components to Complex Physical Therapy:
• Lymphatic drainage massage
• Compression garment and compression bandaging
• An exercise program
• Skin hygiene
Signs or Symptoms of Lymphoedema:
• Sensation of heaviness and tightness in the arm.• Pins and needles in the limb.
• Decreased flexibility in the hand and wrist.
• Rings, watches or clothing becoming tight.
• Joints many become swollen.
• Pain or tenderness in the affected limb.
